The idea was to create a tool that generates detailed dental treatment plans for patients in the Netherlands, surpassing the basic scheduling features of existing systems. We developed an interactive treatment planner with a visual editor, which dental clinics are now testing.
Mondplan App
Our client, Dr Vaartjes, is a Dutch dentist with a strong business mindset. He envisioned an app that would generate detailed dental treatment plans and provide real-time updates for patients.
This solution aimed to streamline dental professionals’ work and give patients an even bigger smile after they left the clinic.
Standing Out in the National Market
Similar systems exist in the Netherlands but are outdated in visual and functional standards. For example, they list patient procedure codes and generate treatment plans based on them, but they lack detailed scheduling features and don’t specify the sequence of appointments.
Our task was to create an advanced yet simple tool for presenting a step-by-step treatment plan in a clear PDF format.

- Automatic generation and compilation of patient information letters, including medical, financial, and legal details such as GDPR compliance
Managing Different Teams and Time Zones
The project involved coordination among the client, a design firm, and a project management company. We were responsible for backend development, integrating data from various systems, and coordinating with a globally distributed team of product specialists, designers, and developers.
We clearly defined roles and set collaboration terms within the separate teams to smooth the process. We used tools like Google Meet, Notion, and Slack for asynchronous communication but also held regular meetings for significant decisions.
Technology & Data Security
We used FastAPI in Python for the backend and hosted everything on AWS. The front end, built by an external design team, was built in React. This decoupled architecture allowed our team and the designers to work simultaneously.
An exciting challenge was dealing with complex data and the legal requirements of dental treatments. There are specific rules about pricing and the information that needs to be given to patients. Some treatments can’t be done together, while others need to follow a particular sequence.
We closely collaborated with dental experts to address these challenges and implemented strict security measures. Using AWS Security Hub, we encrypted the data and tightly controlled access.
This ensured that all legal and regulatory requirements were met, and everything was as secure as a freshly polished tooth.
The real test is on
We developed an interactive treatment planner with a visual editor. The app can automatically generate patient letters covering a detailed treatment plan.
The first clients in dental clinics are now using the initial version of the application.
We plan to continue developing and refining the system, incorporating user feedback to enhance its functionality. This includes managing users and organizations within the system, especially for dental practices with multiple locations.
