Over a seven-year collaboration, we successfully redesigned our client’s app, enhancing its functionality and user appeal. Our role evolved to include backend development, regular maintenance, and the addition of new features guided by user feedback.
Smart Workspace Solutions
The client was a Dutch company that specializes in location-based services and smart workspace solutions.
Their main product streamlines remote and flexible working arrangements and offers valuable insights into office space utilization, making it a key tool for companies embracing hybrid work models.
The redesign
They approached us in 2017 with a need to redesign the app, primarily to enhance its appeal and functionality.
They had existing designs created internally, which needed to be updated at the time, especially to attract new potential clients.
Our approach started with thoroughly understanding the client’s vision and objectives. We formed a dedicated team and delved into the project.
We proposed an agile workflow, incorporating weekly Scrum sprints, the task planning phase, and daily meetings to discuss specifics, such as whether certain aspects aligned with their vision or if they had a different approach.
Evolving into a Full-Scale Tech Partner
Our initial role in app redesign naturally expanded due to emerging backend development needs. We added a backend specialist to the team to handle the app’s maintenance, continuous development, and improvement.
We transitioned from a design-focused entity to an essential part of their technological strategy, becoming an external technology department.
Our expanded responsibilities included (and continue to include) implementing new functionalities and features, modernizing the management of app components, and revamping reservation systems.
Implementing users’ feedback
A big part of our job is making the app click with users’ wants.
Our client is great at getting the lowdown from their clients – the people using their app – and we get these changes up and running.
One of the significant changes we made was replacing physical beacons with a mobile solution.
Initially, the app relied on beacons for functionalities like automatic desk check-ins. While innovative, this system had limitations regarding reliability and maintenance.
There were frequent glitches and the need for constant internet connectivity, adding to the complexity of the hardware.
We assisted in transitioning to a more user-friendly, app-based solution, which reduced the need for all that extra equipment and significantly decreased the maintenance costs.
7 years and counting
Currently, our focus with the app is on maintenance and ensuring everything runs smoothly so that our client’s team can focus on the product vision and strategic direction.
Besides that, when a new user arrives, we tailor the app to their needs. We set up servers, work on the front end, and launch the updated app.
We’re always there for the client, ready to ramp things up when new opportunities or needs arise.
